Summary: Wilson 811201 works as advertised!
Comment: I live in Southcentral Indiana. I commute 35 miles to work. Driving to work I have a signal for the first 8 miles and for the last 8 miles. The middle drive has NO signal at all. I read a review that recommended buying the wired amplifier if you live in a rural area. That is why I selected this unit. I bought the magnet mount antenna (5-6dBi gain), 811201 amplifier, and a phone adapter all for $237 shipped (not from Amazon).

I tested this out the last two days and it worked great. I get 5 bars most of the way through the drive now. There was one part (~1/2 mile) where I got 1 bar and it dropped the call one time briefly. Other than that, it worked great...better than I could have hoped. I bought this unit for my daily commute to work, but I am excited about using it for road trips as well. It didn't extend my range to 50 miles, but it did reach about 20 miles with moderate hilly terrain with plenty of tree cover.

The only drawback are the cords coming off of my phone. I have the amplifier cable, hands-free headphones, and if I had another DC outlet I would hook up my cell phone charger. Fortunately all the cords are pletty long enough for my car so it is just a matter of organizing and routing all the cables.

I strongly recommend this product. If you live in the city, the wireless amplifier might be the best option. Other passengers will be able to share the improved signal boost too.

Enjoy!

Summary: It really does work
Comment: I just returned from a trip to Western Texas, including Big Bend, Guadalupe Mountains, and other remote locations. I already own the Wilson antenna and decided to take the plunge and add this to my collection of gadgets.

My boyfriend and I tried this out on two different phones (Verizon/LG and CellularOne/Audiovox) and we both found that it increased the signal by about two bars above what we had with an external antenna alone. The external antenna usually adds about two bars, so in combination we were able to go from one to five bars with this equipment. We also went from zero to four bars a few times.

There were a few places where it did not work, but they were along the Rio Grande, looking into a remote Mexican village. But other than that we found that we could get a signal almost anywhere.

I live in the mountains, where physical obstructions are common, and I bet that if there were no mountains this would work even better. So if you travel in the Midwest, it should work extremely well for you.

One thing to pay attention to is that when you plug it into your car's powerpoint you have to trigger a power switch on the amplifier's plug, too. In bright light it is difficult to tell if this is on or off. Obviously, if you use it while it is turned off, you will be less than impressed with its performance. I won't admit how many times I did that.

You need to get an external antenna before you can use this, so check out the other Wilson products for that. Also, be aware that Wilson sells an AC adapter for this if you want to use it in your house.

This is a bit pricey, but it allows me to go camping and still keep up with my Web site design business, so for me it was a very worthwhile investment.

Editorial Reviews:

The Direct Connect (inline) Bi-directional Amplifier improves RF coverage in areas with no signal or low signal strength. The unit amplifies both 800MHz and 1900MHz cellularĀ and PCS signals providing up to 3 Watts of output power on the 800MHz band and 2 Watts of output power on the 1900MHz (PCS) Band. Increases your phone's coverage up to 50 miles or more (under ideal conditions.)
